If you or someone you know has been referred for an immigration psychological evaluation, it can be helpful to understand what the process typically involves. This article provides general educational information to help demystify the evaluation process.
Before the Evaluation
The process typically begins with a referral from an immigration attorney. Once contact is made with the evaluating clinician, you will generally complete intake paperwork and consent forms. You may be asked to provide supporting documents relevant to your case — such as records, declarations, or other materials that your attorney has gathered.
The evaluating clinician is a neutral professional. Their role is to conduct a thorough, objective assessment — not to advocate for a particular outcome.
The Clinical Interview
The core of the evaluation is usually a clinical interview. This is a structured conversation during which the clinician will ask about your personal history, experiences, emotional and psychological well-being, and the circumstances relevant to your immigration matter.
The interview may last one to several hours depending on the complexity of the case. Interpreters may be used when needed to ensure accurate communication. You have the right to ask questions about the process at any point.
Psychological Assessment Measures
In some cases, the clinician may administer psychological questionnaires or assessment tools as part of the evaluation. These are standardized instruments that provide additional clinical information to support the evaluation findings.
The Written Report
Following the evaluation, the clinician prepares a written report summarizing their clinical findings. The report is typically provided to the referring attorney for submission as part of the immigration case file. Turnaround times vary and will be discussed at the time of the evaluation.
